Breinton Springs

The springs themselves are the real draw here - cold, clear water bubbling up from the ground in this quiet corner just outside Hereford. It's the kind of place that feels properly alive, with the water temperature staying constant year-round and supporting plants and insects you won't see elsewhere in the county. Not a huge site, but that's rather the point.

Walkers will get the most from Breinton Springs. There's enough to poke around for an hour or so, maybe longer if you're into spotting dragonflies or taking photographs. The water clarity is genuinely striking - you can see straight down - and in spring the wildflowers along the banks are worth timing a visit for. Don't expect manicured paths or visitor facilities. This is a nature reserve as nature reserves should be: a bit rough at the edges, no cafe, no gift shop.

It works well as a stop on a wider walking route rather than a full day out on its own. Being barely two miles from Hereford itself, you could easily combine it with a morning in the cathedral and lunch in town. If you're camping at Long Coppice or Broadmeadow Glamping - both very close by - it's an ideal fifteen-minute walk to stretch your legs after a drive. Ridge Hill and Cuckoo's Corner are also within reasonable reach for a morning visit before heading elsewhere.

Getting there: follow signs from Hereford towards Breinton village. Parking is limited, so go early on weekends. Free to visit, no set hours - it's open access, so dawn and dusk are often best for wildlife.
