The Brazenose Knocker sits on the door of Brazenose House in Stamford, and it's one of those things you'd walk straight past if someone didn't point it out. This 16th-century brass knocker is genuinely remarkable - cast with extraordinary detail, it's survived centuries of Northamptonshire weather and countless hands grabbing it. The knocker depicts a lion's head, executed with the kind of craftsmanship you simply don't see anymore.

Historic enthusiasts will get far more from this than casual visitors, to be honest. It's not a full afternoon's attraction - more of a 10-minute detour while you're exploring Stamford's other medieval buildings. The town itself is genuinely lovely, all honey-coloured stone and proper Georgian terraces, so parking up and wandering around makes sense. You'll want to allow 30 minutes tops to see the knocker and poke about the surrounding streets.

Stamford's close enough to make this work as a morning diversion if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites. Stamford Meadows is just under a mile away, which is handy - you could grab breakfast, walk into town, clock the knocker, and be back for lunch. Rockingham Forest Park - Landal sits about five miles south if you fancy something more substantial for the weekend. The knocker doesn't require advance booking or admission fees as far as we can tell, which is the only sensible way to do it for something this small. Go on a weekday morning to avoid Stamford's weekend tourist hordes.
