Bratton Reservoir

The water sits there grey and still, ringed by low banks that rise barely above eye level. This is Bratton Reservoir near Westbury, and it's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. What you get is a proper working reservoir - functional, no frills, but oddly peaceful for somewhere that's fundamentally industrial.

Bird watchers make the pilgrimage here, and fair enough. The shallow margins attract waders and wildfowl through winter and spring, and you'll spot herons stalking the edges with patient intensity. Walkers find it too - there's a path that loops partway round, though don't expect scenic drama or a manicured lakeside stroll. The landscape is Wiltshire farmland, flat and honest, with Westbury itself just a few miles south.

This isn't a destination on its own. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about birdwatching. There's nothing to buy here, nowhere to sit except on the bank. But if you're staying at Mill Farm Glamping nearby and want to add a morning walk to your break, or you're touring the local parks and fancy somewhere quiet that isn't another beauty spot choked with tourists, it works. Bring binoculars. Bring patience. Leave the kids' expectation of ice cream and playgrounds at home. It's a functional bit of Wiltshire water, and sometimes that's exactly what you need.
