Branksome Recreation Ground

The walk across Branksome Recreation Ground from Poole feels like stepping into someone's back garden - but make that a very large, very wild back garden. It's heathland proper, the sort of place where gorse turns bright yellow in spring and the paths get muddy enough that you'll question your footwear choice within ten minutes.

This isn't a manicured nature reserve with interpretation boards and a café. It's raw heathland where locals bring their dogs, where you might spot adders if you're lucky (and careful), and where the views across the heath stretch for miles. The ground itself is uneven - hummocks and dips that make for proper walking rather than a gentle stroll. You'll want decent boots.

Families with older kids who don't mind getting their knees dirty will find it decent enough for an hour or so. Young children might find the flat bits tedious, and toddlers will struggle with the terrain. Serious walkers and nature types who know their heathland ecology will get far more out of it. Birdwatchers too - the open ground attracts skylarks and other species you won't see in suburban Poole.

It works well as a morning walk if you're based at Meadowbank Holidays or South Lytchett Manor - both top-rated and close enough for a quick trip. Combine it with a beach visit afterwards rather than making it your whole day. Early morning is best for seeing wildlife; midday in summer can feel a bit exposed and baking.
