Branksome Chine Beach

The walk down to Branksome Chine Beach from Poole is steep - genuinely steep - but that's rather the point. You're descending through woodland thick enough to feel properly remote, then suddenly you're on a stretch of sand with the kind of golden cliffs rising up behind you that make every step worthwhile. The beach itself is compact, sheltered, and rarely rammed even in summer. You get rock pools at low tide, reasonable swimming, and enough space to actually find a quiet spot without treading on someone's towel.

This is fundamentally a walker's beach rather than a loungers' beach. The chine itself - that wooded valley - is the main draw. Families with younger kids should think twice about the descent; it's not impossible but it's not a casual stroll either, and the return journey uphill catches people out. Older children and teenagers? They'll manage fine and probably enjoy the adventure of it.

Free to access, no facilities down there beyond what nature provides. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're going to do the walk justice and actually spend time on the sand. Early morning works best to avoid the crowds and catch decent light on the cliffs.

If you're basing yourself at Burnbake Forest Lodges or Meadowbank Holidays nearby, this makes an excellent half-day excursion. It's different enough from the busier Poole beaches to feel like a proper discovery, but close enough that you're not spending half your day travelling.
