Brancepeth Castle

The first thing that hits you about Brancepeth Castle is how intact it looks - a proper medieval fortress sitting just outside Durham with its crenellated walls and gatehouse still commanding the landscape. It's been in the same family for centuries, which explains why it hasn't been turned into a hotel or heritage centre like so many others.

You can walk the grounds and get proper views of the exterior stonework, which is genuinely impressive even if you can't get inside the main building. The castle dates back to the 12th century, and you can read that history in the architecture - the keep, the curtain walls, the whole defensive layout is textbook medieval. It's not going to keep you entertained for hours, but it's a solid 20-minute detour if you're exploring County Durham.

Worth combining with a trip into Durham itself - the cathedral and city centre are only a few miles away. If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Grove Farm or West Hall Glamping, Brancepeth makes a decent afternoon excursion without being a massive drive. Kids might find it a bit static - there's no interactive stuff or tours that I could find - but history enthusiasts will appreciate the chance to see a lived-in castle rather than a museum piece. Access and opening arrangements can be limited, so check before you head out. The setting is lovely, rolling Durham countryside, and that alone makes the short trip worthwhile.
