Box Hill

The view from the top of Box Hill stops you dead. On a clear day you're looking out over the Weald of Surrey - rolling farmland, dense woodland, the whole thing stretching away until the South Downs fold into the distance. It's the sort of vista that actually justifies the climb.

Getting up there takes about 20 minutes from the National Trust car park at the base. The path is steep in places, genuinely steep, so it's not a casual stroll for small children or anyone with dodgy knees. But it's also not mountaineering - thousands of families do it every year. Once you're at the summit, there's a proper viewing platform and enough space to sit around without feeling hemmed in by crowds, even on weekends.

Walkers love this spot because it connects to the North Downs Way and various circular routes through beech woodland that are genuinely lovely. History types will appreciate the Iron Age fort remains, though they're subtle - no dramatic ramparts, just the landscape itself telling stories if you know what to look for.

Free to visit, open all hours since it's outdoors. Allow an hour minimum if you're just doing the hill itself; two hours plus if you're combining it with the woodland walks. Summer's nice but it gets busy. Autumn feels quieter.

From Tadworth, you're well positioned for this. Henfold Lakes sits just 4.6 miles away and makes a decent base if you're planning a proper walking week. Box Hill works as a half-day activity that genuinely earns its place in your itinerary - it's not a tick-box exercise.
