Bovingdon Green

The wetland at Bovingdon Green is the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk rather than a rushed afternoon visit. Spread across marshy ground just outside Chesham, it's a proper haven for birdwatchers and anyone keen on spotting dragonflies and amphibians. The paths are straightforward enough, though you'll want decent boots if there's been rain - the ground stays boggy even in summer.

You're really here for the wildlife. Lapwings breed on the reserve, and if you time it right in spring and autumn you'll catch migrating warblers and wagtails. It's not a dramatic landscape - no views that'll make you gasp - but there's something quietly compelling about watching reed beds shift in the wind and listening for the crack of a bittern if you're lucky enough.

This works well as a morning outing from any of the nearby campsites like Whelpley Hill Park or Fuzzy's Farm. Allow an hour or so depending on how patient you are with binoculars. Families with young children might find it a bit slow unless they're genuinely into wildlife spotting. Serious birders, though, should make it a priority during migration season.
