It's a working forest rather than a manicured attraction - the kind of place where you actually walk through timber operations and forestry management, not around them. The trails wind through mixed woodland with decent glimpses of the surrounding landscape if you pick the right routes.

Walkers get the most from it. This isn't a destination you'd drive across the county for on its own, but if you're camped at Old Park Wood - which sits just down the road - it's a straightforward outing for an afternoon. Families with older kids who don't mind a bit of mud will find enough here to stretch their legs for an hour or two. Younger children might lose interest quickly once they realise there's no play area or obvious focal point.

The forest does what it's meant to do: it's green, it's quiet, and the walking is genuine rather than purely recreational. Don't expect visitor facilities or interpretation boards explaining the ecology - this is working land. Timing-wise, spring and early summer are best when the canopy's full but the paths aren't waterlogged, though autumn brings decent colour if the weather holds.
