Bottle Shaw

The woodland around Bottle Shaw, just outside Heathfield, is proper Sussex - all mature trees, dappled light, and the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place. It's not a manicured attraction with a visitor centre or gift shop; this is genuine forest where you can walk without bumping into hordes of people.

The paths wind through the trees with enough variety to keep things interesting without being demanding. You'll find yourself on proper woodland trails, the kind where you can actually hear birdsong and spot wildlife if you're patient. It's the sort of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a quick hit-and-run visit.

Families with primary-school kids will get a solid couple of hours here, though teenagers might find it a touch dull without specific activities. It's excellent for anyone who just wants to walk and think, or drag a dog around without worrying about crowds. The forest is free to roam, which is refreshing.

If you're camped at Horam Manor just up the road, or one of the other farms dotted nearby, Bottle Shaw fills a useful gap on a rainy-ish day when you can't face proper hiking. It's also genuinely close to Heathfield town if you need supplies or a cafe break. Not revolutionary, but a decent corner of Sussex woodland that won't demand much effort to enjoy.
