Bottle Alley

A narrow strip of wetland squeezed between the A259 and Hastings' suburban sprawl, Bottle Alley is the sort of place you'd miss entirely if you weren't looking for it. Yet this small nature reserve packs genuine wildlife interest into its modest footprint. The name comes from its old use as a dumping ground, though you won't see much evidence of that now - reed beds dominate, with paths threading through to give decent views of the water. Birdwatchers absolutely rate it. Winter brings redwing and fieldfare; spring and summer offer sedge warblers and the occasional rarer migrant if you're lucky. The walk takes maybe 30-45 minutes at an easy pace, so it's not a full day out. Free to visit, no facilities to speak of. Go early if you want to avoid the A259 noise, though you'll never fully escape it. Winter's actually the best time, when migrating birds stop over and the reeds are lower. Summer can feel a bit dense and claustrophobic unless you're genuinely into ornithology. If you're staying at Coghurst Hall Holiday Park, it's close enough for a morning pootle without being worth planning your whole trip around. Families with young kids will get bored quickly - there's no drama here, just reeds and binoculars. But keen birdwatchers staying near Hastings should absolutely slot it in. It's proper wildlife watching on a modest scale.
