Boretree Tarn

The water at Boretree Tarn is surprisingly clear, reflecting the fells above with that particular grey-green light you only get in the Lake District. It's a proper tarn rather than a manicured lake - small, quiet, and the sort of place where you'll actually hear yourself think.

This is moorland walking territory. The tarn sits high up enough that reaching it requires a decent walk, which means fewer casual visitors and more space to breathe. If you're based at Newby Bridge Country Caravan Park or Old Park Wood, this makes a cracking half-day expedition rather than a quick pop. Families with older kids will find it manageable; younger ones might grumble at the climb. Walkers will appreciate the moorland approach and the sense of remoteness, even though you're not actually far from civilisation.

Allow two to three hours return from the nearest car park, depending on fitness. There's no facilities at the tarn itself - bring water and a packed lunch if you want to stay a while. The real value here is the walk itself more than any single destination moment. You get the fell experience without fighting crowds.

Timing matters. Clear weather makes the approach worthwhile; thick cloud and you're mainly walking through mist. Spring and early summer are decent, though autumn when the heather's turned makes the moorland genuinely beautiful. Winter gets boggy and unwelcoming unless you know what you're doing.

If you're after a gentler experience, the tarn might feel like hard work for what it delivers. But if you want actual solitude and moorland air, it's well worth the effort.
