Boreham Wood

The woods around Boreham are the sort of place you stumble into on a Sunday afternoon and suddenly realise you've lost two hours without meaning to. This isn't some manicured forest with interpretive panels and a visitor centre - it's proper woodland, the kind where you crunch through beech leaves and actually feel like you've stepped away from things.

There's a decent network of footpaths threading through, and the canopy is thick enough that even on grey days it feels quite atmospheric. Families with young legs will enjoy it more than toddlers - the paths aren't pushchair-friendly and there's genuine woodland to explore rather than a looped circuit. Dog walkers clearly know about it well. Bring wellington boots if it's been wet.

It works brilliantly as part of a broader ramble around Marlborough way. You're close enough to tackle it as a half-day walk and still have time for a proper lunch in town, or combine it with the Marlborough Downs if you're after something longer. The Cotswold Water Park is a bit further south if you want water-based breaks mixed in.

There's no formal parking that I could trace, which suggests you're parking on the roadside and heading in - not ideal if you've got a full car. Check locally before you go. The real draw here is that it doesn't feel managed or designed. It's a proper woods walk, and that's worth knowing when you're planning your week.
