Booton Common

You'd be forgiven for missing Booton Common entirely - it's that sort of quiet Norfolk spot where the main road slides past without fanfare. But step off the tarmac near Norwich and you're into proper woodland that's been left to do its own thing, managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust as a nature reserve rather than a polished country estate.

It's a working forest, essentially. Silver birch, Scots pine, and heathland scrub make up the habitat, and the walking is straightforward rather than spectacular - good for a two-hour potter rather than an all-day expedition. You'll spot adders in warm weather (they're harmless if you're sensible), and the birdwatching can be decent depending on the season. The car park's basic, facilities are minimal, and that's rather the point.

Families with young children might find it a bit too low-key unless they're keen on spotting wildlife or collecting pine cones. It works better for walkers who want to escape Norwich for a couple of hours without needing a destination or a café at the end. The terrain is easy enough that older relatives won't struggle.

If you're staying at Moat Island Glamping just 2.6 miles away or Bylaugh Country Park Caravan and Campsite a bit further out, Booton Common fills a morning nicely between larger attractions. Free access, no time limits, and genuinely quiet - which in Norfolk can feel like a luxury.
