Bootham Bar

The medieval gateway still commands the northern approach to York like it has for nearly 900 years. Bootham Bar is one of the city's four surviving city bar gates, built in the 14th century and still standing as a proper fortress in miniature - complete with portcullis grooves and defensive arrow slits you can actually trace with your fingers.

You walk straight through it as part of York's city centre, which is the thing: it's free to access and takes about five minutes to cross. The real appeal isn't the rushed passage though. Stop on either side and you'll see why medieval defenders chose this spot. If you're staying at Nurseries Caravan Park or Wagtail Park nearby, Bootham Bar is a natural stop on the walk into York centre - you'll pass it anyway en route to the Shambles or the cathedral. The real magic is seeing how tightly medieval York locked itself down. Combined with the wall walk itself and the other bars scattered around the city, it builds a proper picture of medieval life here. Worth stopping for ten minutes, though not worth a special journey on its own.
