Bonerbo Wood

The woodland around Bonerbo, just inland from Anstruther, is proper Fife countryside - dense enough to feel like you've stepped away from things, but close enough that you're never really lost. It's a working forest rather than some manicured nature reserve, which means the paths are functional and the undergrowth genuinely wild. You get a mix of mature trees and younger plantings, with the occasional clearing where light floods through. The air smells right - that particular damp, mulchy forest smell that tells you something is actually growing here.

Walkers will get the most from it. It's not dramatic or challenging, just solid woodland rambling territory where you can stretch your legs without needing a map or any particular fitness. Children will find it interesting for maybe an hour - there's the novelty of the trees and the chance to splash in whatever wet bits exist, but it won't hold their attention for a full afternoon. History buffs and twitchers might enjoy it more than casual visitors, though neither will find anything remarkable.

The real value is proximity. If you're staying at one of the caravan parks around Anstruther - Silverdyke, Kilrenny Mill, or Bankhead Farm are all within a couple of miles - Bonerbo is an easy leg-stretcher between beach time and lunch. It slots into a day nicely without requiring commitment. Access appears to be free and unrestricted, and there's no specific opening hours issue since it's just woodland. Go early if the midges are out, and wear proper footwear because it gets boggy.
