Bonehill Rocks

Bonehill Rocks sits on the edge of Dartmoor, just a short drive south of Exeter. It's a proper granite outcrop - the kind of place where you scramble up between massive boulders and suddenly the whole moor opens out beneath you. The rocks themselves aren't huge, but the views are genuinely worth the effort.

Getting up there takes maybe twenty minutes from the car park, following a decent path that's not too steep. The boulders are fun to clamber over, though they're unforgiving if you slip, so watch your footing. On a clear day you can see right across Dartmoor - all those rolling hills and distant tors. Even when cloud rolls in, which it does regularly, there's something atmospheric about being up there with the mist rolling past.

It's a decent spot if you're combining a Dartmoor trip with a base near Exeter. Families with older kids and anyone who enjoys a gentle walk will find it rewarding - nothing too demanding, but satisfying once you're up top. Young children might find it tiring if they're not confident climbers. Allow an hour including the scramble and time to potter about.

The real appeal is that it's quiet compared to some of the honeypot spots on Dartmoor itself. You won't fight crowds here, which makes it well worth the detour if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks in the area. Free to visit, no facilities at the rocks themselves, so bring water.
