Bonchurch Park

Walk into Bonchurch Park and you're immediately in proper countryside, despite being minutes from Benfleet. It's a nature reserve that doesn't feel managed to death - there's wildness to it, with woodland trails looping through mature trees and open grassland where you might spot deer if you're lucky enough and quiet enough.

What you get here depends entirely on what you're after. Birdwatchers will spend hours with binoculars; families with young kids might manage 45 minutes before someone complains about legs. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing technical, and the whole place feels genuinely peaceful even when there are other visitors about. Spring is when it properly comes alive - bluebells carpet the woodland floor and the birdsong gets relentless.

It's free to wander, which is the main appeal. No visitor centre, no facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and snacks. You'll want a good hour minimum if you're doing the full loop, though you can dip in for 20 minutes if you're just after a quick leg-stretch.
