Bogmill

The earthworks at Bogmill aren't dramatic - no towering stones or visitor centre with a gift shop. What you get instead is a cluster of low mounds in the Perthshire landscape, the remains of what was likely an Iron Age or medieval settlement. It takes a bit of imagination to see what was actually here, but that's rather the point. You're looking at something genuine, unmanicured, the sort of thing archaeologists still argue about.

This is for people who enjoy a quiet walk and don't mind a bit of detective work. Families with young children might find it underwhelming - there's not much to do beyond poking about and reading any interpretation boards on site. But if you're into settlement history or you're walking the area around Blairgowrie anyway, it's worth the diversion. The nearest town will have the services, but the site itself sits in proper countryside.

Allow an hour if you're serious about it, less if you're just passing through. Free access, as far as we can tell - these archaeological sites rarely charge. The real value comes from fitting it into a longer route through Perthshire. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Corriefodly is closest at under three miles, or Blairgowrie Holiday Park if you want more facilities - Bogmill makes a decent half-morning wander before heading back for lunch. Don't expect revelations, but do expect to actually stand somewhere with real historical weight.
