Bogha-cloiche

The walk up Bogha-cloiche from Newtonmore is a proper hill rather than a serious mountain, which makes it ideal if you want the views without the slog. The summit sits at just under 2,500 feet, and on a clear day you're looking across the Monadhliath range with Glen Spey spreading below like a map someone's left out on a table.

It's a straightforward route that takes most people two to three hours up and back. The path climbs steadily through moorland and heather, and there's a real sense of achievement when you reach the top even though it's not technically demanding. Families with older kids will manage fine, though it's not one for toddlers or anyone wanting a casual afternoon stroll.

What makes it work is the relative emptiness. You'll encounter far fewer people here than on the busier Cairngorm peaks, which means you actually get to enjoy the view without elbowing past crowds. Walkers and hill runners will appreciate the clean ascent and the chance to bag a Munro-adjacent peak without the commitment of a full day in the high mountains.

Newtonmore sits right at the gateway to the Highlands, making this a natural fit if you're staying at Invernahavon Caravan Park nearby. The park itself is well-positioned for exploring the area, and Bogha-cloiche makes a good half-day outing alongside other walks in the glens. Go midweek if you can, and avoid the peak midges season in June and July.
