A working farm just outside Inverness where you can actually get your hands dirty - literally. Bogbain Farm lets you feed animals, help out with farm tasks, and watch how a proper Highland operation runs. It's genuinely hands-on, not some sanitised petting zoo experience.

Kids absolutely thrive here, especially if they've grown up thinking milk comes from a carton. You'll see sheep, cattle, and other livestock, and the staff encourage proper interaction rather than just pointing and moving on. Allow a couple of hours if you're bringing children - they'll want to linger over the animals, and frankly, you might too.

It's free admission, which is proper value for what you get. Check their website for seasonal opening times and any special events - lambing season is particularly good if you time it right, though it can get muddy underfoot.

The location works brilliantly as a break from the Loch Ness tourist circuit. Ardtower Caravan Park sits just 1.5 miles away, making it an ideal spot for families staying put for a few nights rather than constantly chasing attractions. Go Glamping at Loch Ness is equally close and offers something more upmarket if that's your style. Neither requires more than a ten-minute drive to the farm.

Walking groups might find it less appealing - there's no serious trekking involved - but families and anyone curious about Highland farming will find it a genuine, unpretentious experience. It's the kind of place that feels useful rather than staged.
