Bog Wood

The woodland around Turriff isn't what you'd call dramatic - it's a working forest, not some Highlands showstopper. But Bog Wood has its own quiet appeal if you're staying at Turriff Caravan Park and want a proper walk without driving far.

It's exactly what the name suggests: ancient boggy woodland, the sort of place where your boots sink slightly into the ground and everything smells of damp earth. The trees are gnarled and close-packed, filtering the light into something greenish even on bright days. You'll find the usual Aberdeenshire mix of Scots pine and birch, with moss thick enough to silence your footsteps.

For walkers it's solid rather than spectacular. An hour will cover the main paths without feeling rushed. Families with young kids might get 45 minutes before someone starts asking how much longer. History buffs won't find much to hold them - it's nature, not narrative.

The real draw is simplicity. No car park drama, no crowds, no Instagram-queue nonsense. Just a proper Scottish wood where you can actually hear birdsong. Spring is better than winter when the ground turns into a bog, if you'll pardon the irony. Autumn's decent too.

If you're caravan-bound at Turriff and the weather's decent, it's worth the walk. Don't expect it to be the highlight of your trip, but it won't waste your time either. Free to access and properly atmospheric in the way only damp woodland can be.
