Bodiam Castle

The moat gives it away first - a proper water-filled moat, not some dried-out ditch, that tells you Bodiam Castle meant business when it was built back in the 14th century. The whole thing sits on an island in the middle, all crenellations and towers reflected perfectly in the water when the light's right, which makes it one of those rare castles that actually looks like what you imagined castles to be.

Inside you get to wander the ruins - walls still standing in places, gatehouses to explore, and enough space to let your imagination run wild about medieval life. It's not vast, so you won't spend your whole day here, but two hours is realistic if you poke about properly. The setting matters as much as the stones themselves; surrounded by Sussex countryside near Robertsbridge, it feels genuinely removed from the everyday.

Families with kids who like climbing about will get the most from it. History enthusiasts will appreciate the engineering - that moat was seriously clever defensive design. If you're after a proper walk, you can combine it with a ramble around the grounds, though it's not a hiking destination in itself.

Stay at The Original Hut Company just half a mile away and you've got an easy base for exploring castles and the wider Sussex countryside. Seven Acre Woods is a bit further out but worth considering if you want something slightly more secluded. Bodiam works best as a morning or afternoon venture rather than an all-day thing - decent stop-off on a longer trip through the area.
