Boarstall Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a showpiece attraction, Boarstall Wood sits a few miles south of Aylesbury and delivers exactly what you'd want from a quiet corner of Oxfordshire - ancient trees, decent paths, and the sort of peace you forget exists near the Home Counties.

The wood's run by the National Trust, which means it's well looked after without being over-manicured. You get mixed woodland - oak, beech, ash - with a working coppice area where you can see actual woodland management happening. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though it's muddy in winter so waterproofs matter. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're the dawdling type or you've got young kids in tow.

Walkers will get the most from it. It's not a destination on its own - you won't find visitor facilities or a cafe - but it's brilliant as part of a day out combining nearby attractions. If you're staying at Lashlake Barn, it's a reasonable drive and makes for a proper woodland morning without fighting crowds.

The real appeal is low-key. No map reading required, no scrambling over rocks, just trees and air and the sound of whatever wildlife's about. Bring wellies, go early if the weather's been wet, and don't expect Instagram moments. You'll find what you came for though - a genuine bit of English woodland that hasn't been turned into a play park or a gift shop.
