Boars Hill

The walk up Boars Hill is deceptively straightforward until you're halfway there and realise just how steep it actually gets. From Oxford, it's only a few miles south, but this chalk ridge climb rewards you with views that stretch across three counties on a clear day - the Cotswolds, the Thames Valley, all of it laid out below.

It's proper accessible, mind you. The footpath is well-maintained and takes about 45 minutes to reach the summit at around 850 feet. Not exactly Alpine, but for Oxfordshire it's the real deal. You get a genuine sense of elevation and a wind that catches you unawares once you're up there. On a decent afternoon it's genuinely atmospheric - the sort of place where you understand why poets banged on about the view.

Walkers will appreciate the simplicity of it. Families with older kids can manage it fine, though the youngest might flag on the return leg. It's free, naturally, and you can park nearby and start whenever suits. Autumn's the best time - clearer air, fewer school groups clogging the path, and the light's proper golden across the valley floor.

If you're based at Valley Farm Campsite or one of the others dotted around the area, this slots in nicely for a half-day outing. It's not a destination in itself - you wouldn't drive two hours for it - but as part of an Oxfordshire park holiday, it's absolutely worth the climb. The downside? Once you're up there, the actual summit's a bit underwhelming. No café, no view platform, just you and the Cotswolds stretching away.
