Bluntshall Wood

Bluntshall Wood is a proper Essex woodland sitting east of Billericay - the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk more than it demands a special trip. You're talking mixed deciduous forest with enough space to lose the crowd, even on weekends. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though it's muddy after rain so decent boots matter.

What you actually do here is walk. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I can find, just trees and trails. Birdwatchers come for the woodland species, and it's the kind of spot where kids can hunt for fallen branches and dead logs without feeling rushed. Allow two hours if you're taking it slowly; less if you're just after a brisk circuit.

The honest bit: it's not dramatic. If you're expecting ancient woodland drama or rare species, you'll be underwhelmed. But if you want to add a morning's ramble to a park-based holiday - say from Barleylands or Stuarts Wood - it slots in nicely without eating the whole day. Billericay itself is close enough that you could combine it with a café stop on the way back.

Go for the fresh air and a bit of peace. Go with reasonable expectations. Go with the kids if they're happy on unmarked paths. Skip it if you need facilities or a narrative beyond "nice trees, good walk".
