Bloody Acre Hill Fort

Iron Age hill forts aren't usually the kind of thing that stops you in your tracks, but Bloody Acre Hill near Wotton-under-Edge actually does. The earthworks are still substantial - double ramparts that loop around the hilltop in a way that makes you properly understand why Iron Age people chose this spot. The views across the Severn Valley alone justify the walk up.

What you're looking at are defensive ditches and banks dating back around 2,500 years, though honestly, the historical weight of it hits harder when you're standing there than it does reading about it. The name's deliberately grim - it fits the landscape. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, no café. Just you, the grass, and a lot of history.

Walkers get the most from this one. It's not a casual stroll - expect a proper climb and about ninety minutes to do it justice. History types will spend longer poking around the earthworks and trying to work out the defensive logic. Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming once they've reached the top - there's nowhere to play, and the ramparts aren't dramatically tall.

It's free, and there's no set visiting times since it's just a field. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the summer crowds that come through the area.
