Bloater Hill

The highest point in Lincolnshire sounds grander than it actually is, but that's rather the appeal. Bloater Hill sits just outside Market Rasen, and at 564 feet, it's barely a hill by most standards - more of a determined bump in what's otherwise relentlessly flat farmland. The walk up takes minutes, not hours, which means you're not committing your whole afternoon to bag a summit.

What makes it worthwhile is the view backwards. From the top, you can see for miles across the Wolds - proper rolling countryside, hedgerows, distant villages. On a clear day it's genuinely pleasant, though I won't pretend it rivals a proper Peak District viewpoint. Families with young kids or anyone after a gentle leg-stretcher will find it suits them well. You're looking at twenty minutes maximum for the whole thing, including standing about admiring the panorama.

It's free, naturally, and accessible year-round. Summer's best if you want the fields green and the view clean, though autumn has its own appeal when the light turns golden. If you're based at Into the Wild Glamping or Lindsey Trail just down the road, this is the sort of thing you'd do mid-morning between breakfast and something more ambitious. The Lincolnshire Wolds National Landscape is close enough for a proper day out, but Bloater Hill itself is more of a quick check-off than a destination. Still, sometimes that's exactly what you need.
