Blessed Hugh

The Church of the Blessed Hugh sits on the edge of Faringdon, a proper medieval parish church that most visitors to the town walk straight past without a second glance. It's worth stopping for, though - the interior has real character, with original medieval stonework and some genuinely good stained glass that catches the light on a clear afternoon.

You're looking at maybe thirty to forty minutes here if you're the type who reads every brass plaque and takes time with the details. The churchyard itself is peaceful, the sort of place where you can actually hear birds rather than traffic, which is increasingly rare this close to a town. History buffs will appreciate the layers - there's medieval fabric here, Tudor additions, and Victorian restoration work that tells you something about how English parishes evolved.

It's free to visit, and you won't find crowds. Families with younger children might not linger long, but if you've got teenagers who aren't completely resistant to old buildings, it's a decent five-minute detour from the town itself. The Real Campsite just down the road is excellent if you're basing yourself here for a few days - strong ratings, proper facilities - and Faringdon Grange is another solid option nearby.

If you're exploring the broader area, this isn't a destination in itself, but combined with Faringdon's market square and the walking routes around the Cotswolds fringe, it slots in nicely to a weekend trip. Go midweek if you can and you'll have it largely to yourself.
