Bleara Lowe

Bleara Lowe is an archaeological site tucked into the Lancashire moorland near Barnoldswick, and unless you're really into Iron Age settlements or you've got a particular interest in Pennine history, you might find yourself standing in a field wondering what all the fuss was about. What remains are the earthworks of a prehistoric fort - basically humps and bumps in the grass that, yes, were once defensive structures, but they require a bit of imagination to bring alive.

Historians and archaeology enthusiasts will get something from it. So will keen walkers who don't mind a detour into the hills. You're looking at maybe 20 minutes here if you've made the journey, perhaps longer if you've brought a guidebook and fancy piecing together what life looked like for Iron Age inhabitants. The moorland setting is proper atmospheric, particularly when the weather's turning moody.

The real value is how it slots into a moorland walk across the Pennine ridges. Camp at one of the nearby spots - Deerstone Glamping sits barely a mile away, or Shay Gate Farm Campsite at two miles if you want something more straightforward - and use Bleara Lowe as one stop on a longer route. On its own? It's a specialist visit. Worth the detour if you're already in the area hiking, but don't drive out from Barnoldswick expecting pyrotechnics.
