Blean Wood

Blean Wood is a proper working woodland just north of Canterbury - all ancient oak, beech and sweet chestnut trees tangled with bramble and wild paths. It's not a manicured country park with benches and ice cream vans. This is the real thing: a Site of Special Scientific Interest where you're more likely to spot a woodpecker than another person.

You can walk through it, which most people do, following whatever route takes your fancy. Spring brings bluebells across the forest floor. Autumn turns it into a canopy of rust and gold. It's genuinely quiet in a way that feels rare near a city. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - this place is heaving with them.

Walkers will get the most out of this. Families with older kids who don't need constant entertainment will do fine, but toddlers might find it a bit samey. There are no facilities, no café, no admission charge - it's just woodland you can freely access and wander. Allow an hour or so, though you could easily spend longer if you're the lingering type.

If you're based at Brook Farm Glamping or Mount Ephraim just down the road, it's an excellent morning walk before heading into Canterbury proper. The forest feels a world away from the cathedral crowds, which is exactly why you should go.
