Blairvadach Sailing and Outdoor Centre

The Firth of Clyde stretches out properly wide here at Blairvadach, and this sailing centre near Helensburgh is where the action happens if you want to get on the water. It's a working marina with boats coming and going, instructors running courses, and the kind of atmosphere that makes you think you should have learned to sail years ago.

You can watch from the shore for free, which plenty of people do - there's something oddly mesmerising about watching dinghies tack back and forth. If you're keen to actually sail, they run courses for adults and kids, from absolute beginners through to more serious stuff. Kayaking and other watersports are on offer too. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're just visiting, longer if you're signing up for a session.

It's the kind of place that works best for active families or anyone serious about water sports. Sitting on a bench with a coffee is pleasant enough, but you won't be wowed by scenery alone - it's functional and focused on what it does.

Stay at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park just two miles away and you've got proper access to this stretch of the Clyde. The other parks at Glenfinart and Hunters Quay are close enough too, putting you within easy reach of outdoor activity without feeling stuck at a tourist trap. Worth the trip if watersports are on your agenda; less compelling if you're after a quiet contemplative afternoon.
