Blagdon Hill Recreation Ground

Blagdon Hill rises abruptly from the Somerset levels just north of Taunton, a proper little lung for the area. The recreation ground sits at the base of this distinctive hill, offering easy access to both grassland walks and the steeper climb up through woodland to the summit. On a clear day, you'll see right across to the Quantocks and beyond - it's one of those views that makes you understand why people settle in this corner of Somerset.

The main appeal here is straightforward: it's a local spot for walkers and families after a couple of hours outdoors without faffing about with car parks or visitor centres. The paths are well-trodden but nothing taxing, though the hill itself gets steeper if you fancy pushing yourself. Kids won't be bored if they're the running-around type, and on weekends you'll spot families with dogs making the same loop you are.

This works brilliantly as a half-day addition to a longer stay, especially if you're glamping at Dimpsey Shepherd's Hut just six miles south - a quick fifteen-minute drive to stretch your legs after a couple of days on site. The recreation ground is free and open year-round, though spring and autumn are the nicest times to visit when the light's softer and it's not heaving with school groups. Allow ninety minutes for the full circuit including a proper look around at the top.
