Bladens Wood

The woodland around Bladens Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than seek out - a proper Essex forest that feels worlds away from the commuter belt surrounding Billericay. Ancient oaks and beech trees create a canopy thick enough to block out the worst of the weather, and the paths wind through enough glades and clearings to keep you orientated without feeling manicured or overcrowded.

It's ideal for families who want a genuine walk rather than a theme park experience. Kids can burn off energy scrambling over roots and fallen logs, spotting the occasional deer or rabbit if they're patient and quiet. Older children and proper walkers will appreciate the network of paths that let you roam for an hour or several depending on mood. Don't expect signposting - this is old-school woodland exploration, which is exactly the appeal.

The forest is free to access and open year-round, though early morning or weekday visits beat the weekend crowds. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right; autumn turns the whole place golden and damp. Allow at least two hours if you want to do it justice rather than simply pass through.

Stay at either Barleylands or Stuarts Wood - both within easy striking distance - and you've got a proper forest escape that doesn't require leaving Essex. It's not a destination in itself, but as part of a park holiday it adds genuine character to what could otherwise be a fairly generic break.
