Blackpool Zoo Playbarn

The Playbarn at Blackpool Zoo is essentially an indoor soft play area attached to the zoo itself - think ball pits, slides, climbing frames and all the usual suspects for burning off restless energy. It's aimed squarely at under-10s, and it does the job competently enough without breaking any new ground.

What makes it worth considering is the combination. You're not just getting an hour in a warehouse of foam and plastic - kids can split their time between the Playbarn and the actual zoo beyond the glass. So a full day is genuinely possible if you've got younger children who tire of animals quickly. The zoo side has the usual suspects: big cats, primates, reptiles, the works. Nothing particularly rare or exceptional, but serviceable for a Blackpool afternoon.

If your children are under seven, they'll probably get a solid few hours out of this. Much older and they'll be bored within an hour. The soft play is bright and clean but not especially imaginative - you'll recognize the equipment from a hundred other parks.

Families staying at Newton Hall or Haven Marton Mere - both within walking distance - might easily combine a Playbarn session with a zoo visit as a rainy day option. It's convenient rather than unmissable. Opening hours and admission prices weren't available at research time, so ring ahead before you visit. Worth a morning or afternoon as part of a broader Blackpool stay, particularly with younger kids, but don't expect it to be the highlight of your holiday.
