Blacknor Central

The walk out to Blacknor Central rewards you with one of Dorset's most dramatic coastal views - and unlike some of the more famous spots around Weymouth, it doesn't feel overrun. You're standing on high cliffs looking across Portland Harbour and beyond, with the Chesil Beach snaking away to your left and the wider bay opening up in front of you. On a clear day the sight lines stretch for miles.

It's a proper walk to get there, mind you. Not brutal, but you need decent legs and you'll want to give yourself a good hour or more to do it justice. The terrain's a bit unforgiving underfoot in places, so sturdy shoes are essential. Walkers will absolutely get their money's worth here - the coastal path delivers proper views without the crowds you'd fight through at some of the bigger attractions.

If you're based at Chesil Beach Lodge Park or any of the other holiday parks within striking distance of Weymouth, this makes an excellent half-day outing. Bring a packed lunch and binoculars if you're into bird spotting - the cliffs attract all sorts. Best visited earlier in the day to avoid the afternoon glare on the water and to secure parking at the trailhead, which can get tight in peak season.

Not one for very young children or anyone with mobility issues, but for walkers and coastal enthusiasts, it's absolutely the sort of place that justifies a detour from the seafront.
