Blackhouse

The Blackhouse sits on the outskirts of Newtonmore looking exactly as it did centuries ago - a long, low Highland cottage with thick stone walls and a turf roof that seems to grow straight from the moorland. Step inside and you're in a single room where the family would have lived, cooked, and slept, with a central hearth sending smoke through a hole in the roof rather than a chimney. It's genuinely atmospheric. The place smells of peat and age, the light comes in dim and filtered, and you get a proper sense of how cramped and smoky daily life actually was.

This is best for history types and anyone interested in how ordinary Highlanders lived before the 19th century kicked in. Kids might find it interesting for ten or fifteen minutes, then they'll want to move on - it's not interactive or flashy, just real. Walkers love it because you can combine a visit with exploring the nearby moorland, and Invernahavon Caravan Park sits just down the road if you're camping in the area.

Admission details aren't widely publicised, so ring ahead before you go. Allow about 30 minutes to look round properly. The cottage is exposed to the elements, so it's worth visiting on a decent day - autumn light through those low windows can be magic, but February rain will send you scurrying back to your caravan quickly. It's a small detour from Newtonmore but worth it if you're genuinely interested in Highland social history. Don't expect facilities or crowds.
