Blackhead Lighthouse

The lighthouse stands on a rocky promontory just outside Larne, a sturdy red and white striped tower that's been guiding ships into the port since 1848. It's not a massive structure, and you won't be climbing inside - this is purely an external visit - but that's rather the point. The walk to reach it takes perhaps fifteen minutes from the nearest car park, and the path itself is the real reward: you're picking your way across coastal rocks with proper views across the Irish Sea toward Scotland on clear days.

It appeals most to photographers and walkers who don't mind a bit of scrambling. History enthusiasts will appreciate the Victorian engineering, though there's precious little interpretation on site. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes, then get restless. Allow an hour all told, including the coastal amble.

Free to visit, naturally - it's a working lighthouse. Tides matter here; you'll want to check them before heading out, as the rocks can be slippery and some paths are only accessible at lower water. Early morning or late afternoon light works beautifully for photos.
