Blackgang Chine

The cliffs here are collapsing, and that's rather the point. Blackgang Chine, just south of Ventnor on the Isle of Wight's dramatic southern coast, is essentially a ravine carved by erosion - a deep V-shaped gully where the land is actively surrendering to the sea. You can walk down into it and feel the geological drama happening in real time.

It's free to explore, which is good because you're not paying for manicured gardens or attractions - you're paying attention to the raw processes that shape coastlines. The walk down takes about ten minutes depending on your fitness, and the paths are well-trodden though can be muddy and uneven. The sea view from the bottom is genuinely impressive, and the cliffs themselves tower above in layers of sandstone and clay. Geologists love it. Kids find it reasonably interesting as a walk, though it's not an all-day thing - allow an hour including the descent and a proper look around.

Walkers based at any of the nearby sites - Sibbecks Farm Glamping or Warren Hill Camp are closest at just a couple of miles - can easily incorporate this into a coastal ramble. It works well as a morning excursion before heading into Ventnor for lunch. The real appeal is the authenticity of it: this isn't a visitor centre with interpretation boards, it's geology in action. Come on a clear day and you'll see why the Victorians were so obsessed with this corner of the island.
