Blackford

There's not much left to look at, to be honest. Blackford is an Iron Age fort perched above the village of the same name near Auchterarder, and what remains is essentially a grassy mound with traces of ramparts if you know where to look. The site sits on high ground with decent views across Perthshire, which makes the walk up worthwhile even if the archaeological remains themselves are underwhelming.

You're not going to spend hours here. Twenty minutes if you're keen on Iron Age Scotland, ten if you're just passing through. There's no visitor centre, no signage to speak of, no facilities - it's very much a walk-to-and-look-at-the-view affair. History enthusiasts might find it interesting enough, particularly if they're working their way through local archaeological sites, but casual visitors expecting something visually impressive will probably feel a bit let down.

What makes it worth a stop is the location. If you're staying at Alexander House or Craighead Howf - both excellent bases in the area - Blackford fits easily into a morning's ramble. The walk is straightforward and the countryside around Auchterarder is genuinely pleasant. Pair it with exploring the village itself or heading to nearby Glenturret distillery, and you've got a proper afternoon sorted.

Free to visit, naturally. Best in late spring or early autumn when the grass is manageable and the light is good for photographs. Don't expect Instagram gold, but as a quiet spot with a bit of history attached, it does the job.
