Blackditch Wood

A proper woodland walk just east of Stevenage, Blackditch Wood is the sort of place locals know and tourists often miss. Nothing flashy about it - just mature trees, decent paths that actually go somewhere, and a general sense of being actually in the countryside rather than looking at it from a car park.

You'll find mixed woodland here with enough variety to keep things interesting over a couple of hours. The paths are straightforward enough for families with kids who can handle a bit of uneven ground, though trainers beat wellies unless it's been raining hard. Dog walkers clearly appreciate it - you'll see plenty of them of a weekend. If you're after a serious hike it won't stretch you, but if you want a solid escape from town without driving halfway across the country, it delivers.

Timing-wise, aim for mid-morning or early afternoon. Dawn is lovely if you're into that sort of thing, and late afternoon light through the trees is genuinely worth planning around if you've got a decent camera.

The real value here is as part of a wider Hertfordshire walking loop. If you're basing yourself at Church Farm Ardeley - a solid four-star site just a few miles away - this makes an easy morning out before settling in for a leisurely lunch. It's not spectacular enough to plan a trip around, but as local filler during a park holiday it's well worth your time. Free, obviously. Proper woodland, proper walk.
