Blackbushes Clump

A small copse of beech and oak just south of Winchester, Blackbushes Clump is the sort of place that rewards a gentle wander rather than a destination hike. The trees are mature and proper thick on the ground, which means even on busy days you'll find pockets of quiet between them. It's about 20 minutes from Winchester town centre, making it handy if you're staying at The Spinney Caravan Park or Woodlands Camping and fancy something short but green.

There aren't visitor facilities here - no café, no car park with facilities, no information boards. You just turn up and walk among the trees. That's rather the appeal. Dog walkers love it for a quick leg stretch, and families with younger kids who get tired easily will manage the paths without complaint. The woodland floor is soft underfoot most of the year, though it does get muddy after rain.

Give it 45 minutes to an hour if you're combining it with other activities in the area. It's not a destination on its own merits unless you're genuinely craving some serious woodland peace. Spring is lovely for bluebells if you time it right, and autumn colours are decent without being spectacular.

If you're based at either of the nearby parks, it's worth a morning outing before heading into Winchester itself or pushing on to longer walks elsewhere. Realistic expectations help here - treat it as a breathing space rather than an adventure, and you won't be disappointed.
