About Blackbush Down
The climb itself is gentle enough, though the final stretch can be a bit boggy depending on the weather. Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the kind of place where you notice the landscape properly - the way the valleys fold into each other, how the light changes across the turf. Allow an hour to hour and a half for a decent explore and a rest at the top.
There's no formal infrastructure here - no visitor centre, no admission charge that I'm aware of. You just park somewhere sensible and go. That's rather the point.
If you're based at Chalke Valley Camping just a few miles away, Blackbush Down makes an excellent half-day excursion. The campsites are well-positioned for this stretch of downland walking. Hill Cottage Farm over in Fordingbridge is similarly close. It's not a day-out destination on its own, but paired with other walks in the area or as a break from campsite life, it does the job well. Come autumn when the light's lower and the grass is drier underfoot - that's when it really shows itself.
