Blackberry Hill

The walk up Blackberry Hill isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. From Castle Douglas, it's a straightforward drive south - maybe fifteen minutes if you know where you're going - and the car park is modest but adequate. The summit itself sits at around 370 metres, which doesn't sound much until you're climbing it on a Scottish afternoon with the wind picking up.

What makes this worth the effort is the view across Loch Ken and the Galloway hills beyond. On a clear day you can see properly south towards the English border. The walk takes about an hour there and back if you're moving steadily, which suits families with older kids fine - younger ones might find the steepness tedious though. There's no café at the top, no visitor centre, just grass and sky and the occasional grouse.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's the sort of hill that doesn't grab headlines but rewards a proper visit. If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park or Galloway Glamping - both within a few miles - it's a logical half-day jaunt rather than a whole afternoon commitment. Mollance Farm Caravan Park is also close by. The midges can be fierce in summer, so go early or wait for a breeze. It's free, obviously, and there's no time limit. Just don't expect crowds or facilities - that's rather the point.
