Blackamoor Hill

The walk up Blackamoor Hill rewards you with views across the Wear Valley that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's a proper climb from Stanley, mind you - nothing technical, but steady enough that you'll feel it in your legs. The summit isn't dramatic or craggy; it's more honest moorland than mountain theatre. You get what you earn, though. On the way up, the landscape shifts from suburban fringe to proper open country, and that transition alone makes it worth doing.

This is one for walkers who appreciate the effort-to-view ratio rather than Instagram moments. Families with older kids will manage it fine, but little ones might flag. Allow a couple of hours for a there-and-back tramp, longer if you're combining it with other routes in the area. The best light is late afternoon when the sun's lower and the valleys show more definition.

Stanley sits at the base, a former colliery town with proper character. If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Beamish Holiday Park is closest at just over three miles away, or splash out on Beamish Glamping or Derecroft's luxury lodgepods if you want something fancier - Blackamoor Hill makes a solid half-day outing. The Beamish area itself has the museum and plenty of woodland walks, so you could easily structure a few days around this corner of Tyne and Wear. It's not the Lakes or the Pennines, but it's good honest walking country that doesn't demand you drive across the region.
