Black Sheep Brewery

The Black Sheep Brewery sits just outside Ripon, housed in a former maltings building that feels properly industrial. You're walking through genuine brewing kit, not a theme park version - copper vessels, fermentation tanks, the whole operation laid bare. The brewery tour takes you through the process from grain to glass, and the guide knows their stuff without being preachy about it.

What makes it worth the trip is the tap room. The ales are genuinely good - crisp, flavourful, nothing pretentious - and you can try flights without committing to a full pint. Food's solid too, nothing fancy but well-executed pub fare. The space has that relaxed vibe of somewhere that's been doing this for a while and doesn't need to oversell itself.

Families with older kids will find it engaging enough, though under-tens might lose interest once the novelty of seeing the tanks wears off. Real ale enthusiasts will obviously get more from it than casual drinkers, but you don't need to be a beer nerd to enjoy an afternoon here.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Sleningford Watermill is closest at under four miles - this makes an excellent half-day outing. Combine it with Ripon's town centre, which has decent shops and restaurants, and you've got yourself a proper day out. Go midweek if you can; weekends get busy and the tap room loses some of its charm when it's rammed.
