Black Isle Bed and Breakfast

The Black Isle isn't actually an island at all - it's a peninsula jutting into the Moray Firth near Fortrose, and the B&B here is a proper base for exploring one of the Highlands' least crowded corners. The landscape is gently rolling farmland and coastal paths rather than dramatic peaks, which means families with younger legs won't feel out of place, and walkers can actually have a conversation without gasping for breath.

What makes this spot work is the sheer peace of it. You're close enough to Fortrose to grab supplies and coffee, but far enough away that the tour buses don't bother showing up. The Moray Firth coastline is genuinely worth your time if you're into seals and dolphins - they're about regularly in the water just offshore. Spring and early summer are best for spotting them.

If you're camping at Fortrose Bay Campsite just down the road, treating the B&B as an occasional night off makes sense. It's not fancy - this is rural Highland hospitality, straightforward and honest. The real draw is having a comfortable bed while you're out walking the quieter paths around Chanonry Point or across to Rosemarkie.

Allow a few hours for a coastal ramble, longer if the light's good. Entry to the B&B itself is obviously accommodation-dependent, so you're committing to at least one night to stay. Worth it if you're after somewhere genuinely off the main Highland trail.
