Black Hillock

The walk up Black Hillock catches you off guard with how quickly the landscape opens out. It's not a dramatic peak - more of a proper hill rising above the moorland near Ballater - but once you're up there, you get unobstructed views across Aberdeenshire that make the effort worthwhile. The ascent itself is straightforward enough, taking the better part of an hour from the car park, with a clear path that doesn't demand scrambling or serious fitness. What strikes you most is the quiet. On a decent day, you might have the place entirely to yourself, which feels rare these days. Walkers will find this a solid half-day outing, especially if you're staying in the area and want something less hectic than the busier Cairngorms trails. It's the sort of walk families can manage too, provided the kids are reasonably keen - nothing technical, just steady climbing on open ground. The surrounding moorland changes character through the seasons, golden in late summer and properly bleak come winter. If you're based at Howe of Torbeg holiday park just down the road, Black Hillock makes an excellent morning sortie before heading back for lunch. The access is free and there's no real restriction on when you can go, though midges in summer are properly vicious, so plan accordingly. It won't blow your mind, but it's a genuine, honest hill walk.
