Black Hill Wood

The woodland floor at Black Hill Wood is soft underfoot - years of leaf litter and moss create a proper spongy path that's easy on the knees. It's a small patch of forest just outside Haywards Heath, the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss entirely.

Walking through here feels genuinely peaceful. The trees are tall enough to create real shade, and there's enough of a maze to the paths that you won't feel like you're just stomping around a park. It's not dramatic or vast - more a quiet thirty-minute ramble than an all-day adventure. Families with young kids won't find facilities or themed trails, but if they're happy to let loose among the trees without a playground at the end, it works fine.

Bring wellies if it's been wet. The ground drains poorly in places, and puddles appear fast. Spring's decent, though summer gets buggy. Winter's actually rather nice if the frost's holding.

If you're staying at Raylands Country Park nearby, this is a straightforward walk to fill a quiet morning before heading elsewhere. Don't expect signage or visitor infrastructure - you're coming here for trees and fresh air, not much else. It's the sort of wood that's properly useful rather than special, though that unpretentious quality is rather its charm. Good for clearing your head, not worth a solo trip from town.
