Black Hill

The walk up Black Hill rewards you properly. It's not a mountain in the dramatic sense - more a determined lump of ground that rises from the countryside near Perth - but the views across Fife and Tayside on a clear day make the climb feel worthwhile.

You're looking at roughly ninety minutes up and back, depending on your pace and which approach you take. The summit itself is fairly modest, nothing you'd write home about in terms of facilities or dramatic vistas, but it's the kind of place where you genuinely feel like you've earned a bit of fresh air and perspective. On good weather days, the Tay estuary spreads out nicely below you.

This is proper walking country rather than a tourist attraction with facilities. Bring your own water, wear decent boots - the ground can be boggy - and don't expect a café at the top. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the walk a bit of a slog.

Staying at Snugs at Logie Farm or Annsmuir nearby gives you a solid base for exploring the area. Black Hill works well as a morning outing before heading into Perth for lunch, or as an afternoon walk if you're after something to stretch your legs without committing to a full-day expedition. It's the sort of thing you do because you're in the area and the weather looks decent, not because you've planned a pilgrimage. Free to walk, obviously - you're just heading out onto the hills.
